Bone Grafting/Implant Patients

  • No electric/mechanical toothbrush or waterpik at or near grafted/implant site for at least 2 months, use of only a soft manual toothbrush is recommended. If the electronic devices are utilized, they may delay and/or disrupt the healing and lead to failure of the graft and need for additional procedures.
  • Rather than rinsing with the prescription oral rinse or warm salt water after the first 24 hours**, we advise you do not rinse the area for 3 days**, rather gently brush the area with a soft manual toothbrush dipped in the antimicrobial rinse. That way you do not create any foaming in the mouth. For 3 days soak gauze / cotton ball in antimicrobial rinse and dab the bone grafted site 2X a day. After the 3rd day you may gently rinse with the prescription rinse as directed and warm salt water after meals.
  • Pressure to the grafted or implant site may alter the healing of the bone and or soft tissue anatomy in the area and if you wear a “flipper” or other prosthetic device you may be advised to keep it out as much as possible while at home. When you are out in the public eye you may wear your flipper. We encourage you to wear your flipper for a few hours each day. Do not wear your flipper in bed, remove it every night.
  • ➢ Do not chew or bite on implant, healing cap or grafted site
  • ➢ If you have severe or unmanageable pain at any point in your healing please call us right away
  • ➢ If you have dull lingering pain after day 5 (even if you are no longer requiring medication), please call as this can be a sign of infection and should be evaluated
