PRE-SURGERY GUIDELINES

IV SEDATION/GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Fasting
Hydrate well with non-caffeinated drinks the day before your procedure. You will stop eating heavy or fatty foods 8 hours prior to your arrival. Stop all food, candy, gum, and non-clear liquids 6 hours prior, and stop all clear liquids 2 hours prior. *The only exception is taking approved medications with a small sip of water.

General Medication Instructions
Take all regularly scheduled medications as usual with a small sip of water, unless your doctor gives you different instructions. If you were instructed to start the prescription Peridex mouth rinse, you will begin using it 2 days prior to your surgery, rinsing 2 times each day and once more on the morning of your appointment. *You’ll continue to rinse, as directed, for an additional 7-10 days, unless otherwise instructed.

Asthmatic and Diabetic Patients
If you have asthma, use your rescue inhaler with a spacer roughly 20 minutes before your treatment—even if you rarely use it—and bring the inhaler with you. If you are diabetic, test your blood glucose before your treatment and bring your glucometer to the appointment. You may be instructed to hold certain medications; *If you are unsure which specific diabetes medications you need to hold, please contact our office immediately for guidance.

Surgical Attire & Piercings
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with sneakers (avoid heels, flip-flops, sandals). Choose a short-sleeved T-shirt or a top with sleeves that can easily roll up past your elbows. You must remove all facial and tongue piercings, though small earrings that sit close to the ear are permitted. If you wear contact lenses, please wear your glasses instead or bring your lens case and solution to remove them at the office.

Driver & Escort Requirements
Patient drop-off is strictly prohibited for all IV sedation and general anesthesia appointments.
Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. For patients over 18, a responsible adult must drive you to and from the appointment. In both cases, your escort must remain on the premises for the entire duration of the procedure. Patients are not permitted to drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours following sedation.
