PLANNING FOR YOUR UPCOMING VISIT
Recovery Time & Activity
Generally, peak swelling and pain 2 to 4 days after surgery, though individual recovery times vary. Most patients can return to light activity within 2 to 3 days. Please wait at least one week before starting vigorous exercise, sports, or long-distance travel, as these can disrupt healing. Your doctor may also schedule a follow-up appointment during this first week.
Soft Foods to Have Ready
Stock up on easy-to-eat soft foods before your procedure so you are prepared for recovery.
We recommend having items on hand such as eggs, pancakes, yogurt, ice cream, mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese, fish, soup, and Jell-O.
CRITICAL: Do not use drinking straws for 7 days after surgery.
Medications to Prepare
Purchase your over-the-counter pain relievers ahead of time, disregarding any that you are medically unable to take. We recommend having Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) and Extra Strength Tylenol (acetaminophen) on hand, as taking these together provides highly effective post-operative pain control.
Post-Op Ice Packs
Buy a few bags of frozen peas or corn to use as ice packs. They conform perfectly around the corners of your jaw and can be refrozen as needed. Please note that after thawing and refreezing these bags multiple times, they are no longer safe to eat.
Protecting Linens
Set aside a few old pillowcases for your bed. It is completely normal for a small amount of pink, blood-tinged saliva to ooze while you sleep, and using older linens will prevent permanent stains on your nice bedding.
* Prescription Mouth Rinse (Peridex)
If prescribed, start using your Peridex rinse 2 days before your surgery. Use it 2 times each day leading up to the procedure, and again on the morning of your scheduled appointment. You will continue to rinse, as directed, after treatment for an additional 10-12 days, unless otherwise instructed.
