INSERTION OF HEALING DENTURES
For patients who have undergone removal of remaining upper and/or lower teeth with insertion of an immediate (healing) denture.
Adjusting to Your New Dentures
We know that adjusting to new dentures can be a big transition, and it is completely normal if they don’t fit perfectly at first. Since they usually need a few tweaks to feel comfortable, please reach out to the provider who made your dentures to schedule an adjustment appointment if you don’t already have one set up.
The First 3 Days After Surgery
Once the majority of the bleeding stops, please try your best to keep your dentures in continuously for the first 3 days after surgery, including while you sleep. Leaving them in acts like a natural bandage, which is crucial for minimizing post-operative pain and keeping swelling down.
Cleaning and Rinsing
After the first 24 hours have passed, it is okay to briefly remove your dentures to gently clean your mouth. You can use this time to rinse with warm salt water and your prescribed mouthwash (Peridex), but please be sure to place the dentures right back in afterward.
Using Denture Adhesive
If you need to use a denture adhesive to help keep them secure, you may do so. However, to protect the healing tissue, DO NOT place any adhesive directly in the areas where your teeth were removed. Instead, only apply the adhesive to stable areas, such as the roof of your mouth.
